HEI has been invited by the Airport Authority to engage in the strategic development of a trial outdoor 5G implementation ‘airside’ at Hong Kong International Airport.
On top of sharing thoughts on how to move Hong Kong towards smart city status, Kumshing is an enabler of this new ecosystem by providing practical engineering solutions to its clients.
The Hong Kong Airport Authority has been pushing hard to make Hong Kong International Airport “smarter”, deploying the latest technologies to help make passengers’ journey even smoother and more enjoyable. To this end, the Authority met its promise to deploy trial 5G programs by early 2020 to test the technology within the airport island. HEI – the investment, consulting and technology application arm of Kum Shing Holdings – is privileged to have been invited to build a trial outdoor 5G implementation ‘airside’ at Hong Kong International Airport.
Tapping the expertise of Hong Kong Telecom, HEI extended the extensive knowledge built up by Kumshing over half a century of engagement in the development, operation and maintenance of infrastructure assets to provide a one-stop solution for this concept trial. This successful trial of signal coverage, throughput speed and reliability, as well as overcoming the technical challenges of deploying a 5G system using a network of outdoor lamp poles, meant innovative technology for smarter travel will appear in the blink of an eye.
Close to 2 km of fiber and power cables were laid in a 1 square km area to serve 5 telecom antennas and their backup equipment. The major part of the installation, as well as the first phase of the outdoor 5G signal test have been completed, and we have received promising results which bring good reference value to all the concerned parties.
With the new three-runway system due to be completed in 2024, there are additional opportunities for the Authority to continue its leading role in 5G application deployment, and HEI is glad to be a part of the pioneering team.
